Project Description
This once-challenging backyard in Riverdale, NJ, has been transformed into a stunning multi-level retreat where relaxation, connection, and outdoor living come together. The homeowners dreamed of a space where their family could gather, play, and enjoy life—despite the steep slope that made the original yard unusable. By reimagining the landscape, we crafted a haven that feels expansive, elegant, and harmonious with the natural surroundings.
At the heart of this design is a fiberglass pool, surrounded by rustic fieldstone accents that bring a timeless, natural feel to the space. Earth-toned pavers with a charcoal border define the pool area, while lush planting beds soften the edges and add layers of beauty. The pool area flows seamlessly into a spacious upper patio that serves as a connection hub, complete with an outdoor kitchen, dining area, and organized storage for trash and recycling.
Wide, graceful steps with natural stone veneer connect the three distinct levels of the landscape, preventing the space from feeling confined by the tall retaining walls. These Unilock segmental walls, accented with a bold charcoal border, add stability and structure while maintaining an elegant look.
On the second tier, a cozy fire pit area with ample seating invites family and friends to gather, while a tucked-away hot tub offers a private retreat for relaxation. This thoughtful design turns every corner of the yard into an opportunity for making memories, proving that even the most challenging spaces can be transformed with creativity and care.

The original backyard’s steep slope rendered it nearly unusable for gathering, relaxing, or playing. The challenge was to design a layout that terraced the space into functional levels while maintaining a sense of openness and flow.
Our solution included creating wide natural stone steps to connect the levels without feeling confined by the tall retaining walls. Strategic drainage solutions were also incorporated to manage runoff, protecting the landscape and ensuring its long-term stability. By blending materials like fieldstone, Unilock retaining walls, and earth-toned pavers, the design balances rustic charm with modern functionality, making every part of the space inviting and practical.
